Lot Essay

While living in Rome between 1685 and 1695 von Tamm became aquainted with the citys Italo-Flemish artists through Gaspar van Wittel. He sometimes worked with Carel van Vogelaer, who shares a somewhat similar, if more painterly, style. From the end of the 17th century he was in Vienna, attached to the imperial court as a painter. It was during this time that his style came close to that of Jan van Huysum.
We are grateful to Mr. Fred Miejer of the RKD for tentively suggesting the attribution on the basis of photographs.
