Lot Essay
Vreedenburgh was much admired by his contemporaries. He was praised for his accuracy and sensitivity, straightforward style and his ability to attain a lively atmosphere in a composition. In the 1930's Vreedenburgh and Tholen visited many towns along the Zuiderzee together and Vreedenburgh traveled to provincial towns throughout the country. It has been suggested that the present lot depicts 's-Graveland with the 's-Gravelandsche Vaart and the back of the houses on Noorder- or Zuiderzijde. The houses and trees reflect in the tranquil water and the soft summer haze is rendered with striking accuracy.
