Lot Essay

At the base of each of the two central palmettes is what appears to be a heavily stylised human face. This is a feature that appears on a small group of Koum Kapi rugs of very similar weave to the present example which almost all have animals and animal combat groups. It is probable that this is the signature of the Koum Kapi master. Another rug with the same signature, was sold in these Rooms, 17 October 2002, lot 39.
