Lot Essay

In Landscape earth meets sky in the blazing Mediterranean light - the essence of landscape achieved with the artist's careful distillation of what he perceives to basic forms and colours. "A humanized nature and a poetical relationship between man and universe are seen in the landscapes of fields and in earth-sky depictions." (G. Ofrat, One Hundred Years of Art in Israel, Colorado, 1998.)

Working in the Paris studio of Jean Souverbie, Reisman "...perceived clear and unified planes of color, and simplified basic forms, as authentic painting that deals with the essential." (G. Bar Or and M. Omer, ed., 90 Years of Israeli Art a Selection from Joseph Hackmey-Israel Phoenix Collection, Tel Aviv, 1998, p. 454). To adapt to the intensive light in Israel, the artist had to re-think and re-work his art in black and white so "...he could return to painting in colour with a new understanding of the light, and establish relations of equal power between object and background, between the landscape and the sky". (Ibid.)
