A ROYAL CROWN DERBY COBALT-BLUE GROUND VASE
Date cypher for 1904, printed puce crowned monogram mark, model no. and pattern no. F442/1363, incised 1363, designed by and signed Leroy.
Of baluster form with upright gilt angular handles, finely painted with a panel of flowers within an elaborately beaded cartouche, enriched with turquoise enamelled 'jewels', the reverse with a gilt flower spray and bee in flight, the neck and spreading foot enriched with foliage on a dark-green ground, the interior gilt
7½ in. (19 cm.) high

See John Twitchett and Betty Bailey, Royal Crown Derby, New York, 1988, p. 84-86 for a discussion on Leroy's distinguished career. Désiré Leroy appenticed at the Sèvres factory in the mid-19th century. At the age of 38, he moved from France to take an appointment at Minton. In 1890, he was engaged and given his own studio by Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company where he remained until his death in 1908.

A contemporary commentator described his work as 'deserving of great praise...These for neatness, delicate manipulation, and artistic refinement, cannot be surpassed, and this is the character of all his work.'
