FROM THE COLLECTION OF MARILYN BURNETT ROSS OF PLEASANT RIDGE, MICHIGAN
A passionate connoisseur of ceramics, Marilyn Burnett Ross was an active and committed member of the collecting communities in both the Detroit area and in New York, where she and her husband, Donald, kept a second home. Ross was a charter member and past president of the Midstates Ceramic Circle, a member of the Michigan Oriental Society and the American Ceramic Circle, and a 50-year member of the Detroit Insitute of Arts Founders' Society. She was also active in the Asia Society, New York. As an enthusiastic scholar of the Asian arts, Marilyn kept meticulous records of her acquisitions and her research. She enjoyed sharing her knowledge, and taught adult education classes on the decorative arts in her community and at the Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn. Among her other keen interests were antique textiles, sewing and quilt-making.
Marilyn's eye for pattern and colour, her abiding love for ceramics, and her extensive knowledge of the arts are all reflected in the elegant group of pieces we offer in this sale. Represented is the work of late 19th and early 20th century French, English and Hungarian manufacturers whose designs attempted to reproduce the textures and colors of the exotic Middle and Far East that captured the imaginations of Europeans at that time. The juxtaposition of metallic foils and iridescent grounds with more matt solid blocks of colour, the clean palette of bright enamels, and the interplay of shapes formed by unknown flora and fauna captivated the 19th century collector - as they did this astute modern woman over one hundred years later.
