The box with glazed top and plaque to the front inscribed THOMAS MERCER LTD/16638 above the Navy mark, also signed THOMAS MERCER LTD./AT. ALBANS ENGLAND above repeat number to the silvered and engraved dial, also with Navy mark, 56-hour up/down dial, also numbered to the bowl, rear of dial and back plate, the latter spot-finished, chain fusee with maintaining power, Earnshaw's spring detent with helical spring -- 7 in. (18 cm.) square

Lot Essay

No.16638 was purchased by the Admiralty on 7 July 1944 for £36. Records note that it was transfered to Australia on 12 December 1944. Presumably in the intervening period it was on test at Kew.
