Lot Essay

Either Jean-Baptiste-Claude Baltazar, who flourished in the rue Contrescarpe from 1765, or Jean-Baptiste Baltazar, Compagnon horloger, who was appointed Cour du Dragon in 1778.

The clock is designed in the mid-l8th Century 'gôut Grec' fashion and is garlanded with fruit and flowers crowned by Apollo's lyre in a pastoral trophy of musical instruments. A love-trophy of Hymen's acanthus-wreathed torch embellishes its antique-fluted and hollow-sided 'altar' pedestal, while Bacchus's 'thyrsus' pine-cone embellishes its garlanded plinth. Its ornament may indicate that it originally served as a 'Pendule a Musique' on a music box. A clock of this present pattern was offered at Christie's Monaco, 19 June 1988, lot 27.
