ORIGINAL SHEEP, MOROCCO LETTERING PIECES (minor chipping and cracking along joints and at extremities); morocco solander case. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, MARK TWAIN'S COPY (signed "Mark Twain"), with early issue points: the rare state 1 of p. 283 with the engraving (the infamous "fly" plate) in the original state before defacement, the leaf integral to the original quire ("In this original state the leaf has been seen only in early prospectuses and in leather bound copies of the published book" -- BAL); frontispiece portrait in state 1 (tablecloth visible); title in state 3 (copyright dated 1884, conjugate with 1/7); p.13 in state 1 ("Him and another Man"); p.57 in state 1 ("was" for "saw" line 23); p. 155 state 1 (2?, with the final "5" lacking); final leaf blank.

John Fleming's letter of 1957 states that this copy appeared in Rosenbach's catalogue of modern authors, 1933. He notes that "This and several other volumes were purchased many years ago by Dr. Rosenbach from Mrs. Collier who either represented the Mark Twain estate or purchased them from it." BAL 3415; Grolier American 87; Peter Parley to Penrod, pp. 75-76.
