A HIGHLY IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION SET

FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED TO ELLEN TERRY on the half-title in his characteristic purple ink: "Ellen Terry from Lewis Carroll with sincere regards Dec. 12. 1889." Ellen Terry (1847-1928) made her first appearance on stage when she was nine years old. Her debut was in the role of Mamillius in The Winter's Tale. "[Dodgson] was...enchanted by the mystique of the theater and the people connected with it, but in the early years, he idolized Ellen Terry above all. For him, she personified the theater itself, and he worshiped her as his thespian goddess. His diaries contain eighty-three entries about her. he saw virtually every play she acted in and frequently went backstage to visit her" (Cohen, p. 307).

It is not certain that Dodgson ever fell in love with Terry, although his sister believed he was in love with the famous actress when she was about seventeen. Hudson speculates it is unlikely that he ever declared his love, if it existed, or that he ever seriously contemplated marriage with Ellen Terry, for she was then already married (though unhappily).
