SHEPARD, Ernest Howard (1879-1976). "Christopher Robin nailed it on." Original pen-and-ink drawing for Winnie-the-Pooh (1926). SIGNED "EHS" at lower right. 6¾ x 9 15/16 in. (170 x 253 mm). With green leather gilt border surrounding edges of the illustration board. Shepard's pencilled captions on recto read: "the Pooh Finds a Tail" and "Christopher Robin nailed it on"; and with the artist's signature and return address in ink on verso.
"...So with these words he unhooked it, and carried it back to Eeyore; and when Christopher Robin had nailed it on its right place again, Eeyore frisked about the forest, waving his tail so happily that Winnie-the-Pooh came over all funny, and had to hurry home for a little snack of something to sustain him. And wiping his mouth half an hour afterwards, he sang to himself proudly: Who found the Tail? 'I,' said Pooh, 'At a quarter to two (Only it was quarter to eleven really), I found the Tail!'" (pp. 52-53). The illustration from the drawing appears on page 52.
