In 1953 Argentina was represented at the II Bienal Internacional de Arte de São Paulo by a group of artists selected by Romero Brest.
The art critic brought to Sao Paulo not only members of the Argentinian avant-gard: Martín Blaszko, Alferdo Hlito, Gyula Kosice and Raúl Lozza, but also more independent artists who were working within the abstract movement in a freer way such as Sarah Grilo, Miguel Ocampo, José Antonio Fernández and Julián Althabe.
A member of the Asociación Arte Nuevo, Julián Althabe participated in numerous exhibitions during the 1950's and was invited again to exhibit his sculptures at the IV and V editions of the Sao Paulo Bienial.
