Lot Essay

Frederick Baker notes that the present painting reflects the artist's summer travels to Spain, but was most likely painted in New York. Additionally, like many oil sketches of this nature, Girl with Guitar was possibly included in Chase's 1886 retrospective at the Gallery of the Boston Art Club and may have appeared under a generalized title (i.e. Study of a Spanish Girl) that has since become disassociated with the painting.

According to Mr. Frederick Baker, the present work is included in Ronald Pisano's complete catalogue of known and documented works by William Merrritt Chase, 1849-1916.
