Lot Essay

Talbot captured this image of the suspension bridge, designed by renowned engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and erected between 1841 and 1845, from the North Bank looking southward. In 1860, 15 years after Talbot documented the opening of this toll bridge, it was taken down and replaced by the Charing Cross Railway Bridge.

Prints of this image are found in the following institutions: National Museum of Photography, Film & Television, Bradford (including Royal Photographic Society Collection); Canadian Centre for Architecture; J. Paul Getty Museum; National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY (in the Gilman Paper Company Collection); and National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. This is one of only a few known prints in private collections, including the William Henry Fox Talbot Trust.
