Lot Essay

This image relates to Man Ray's Ostrich Egg, 19441; it appears to be a tight crop of the latter's upper right curve. However, the glittering black sandpaper mount and the collaged stamp both relate to works from the 1960s: Etoile de verre, 1965 was executed on similar paper; the same patterned stamp appears on a collaged matchbox from the early 1960s (Sotheby's, London, Man Ray sale, 22-23 March 1995, lots 405 and 531, respectively). This then may be a unique photo-based work by Man Ray, incorporating his hallmark mixed-media approach.
