Lot Essay

'In 1949 Ben Hogan had a near fatal car accident. His doctors said he would never walk again, let alone play golf competitively. But against all odds be recovered and went on to enter the 1950 U.S. Open. This image, considered one of the greatest photographs in sports, shows Hogan's famous one iron shot to the last green in the final round to force a playoff with George Fazio and Lloyd Mangrum. The next day Hogan won the 18 hole play-off to win the U.S. Open.' - J.D.
