A PAIR OF VENETIAN COPPER LARGE ANDIRONS
DATED 1871
One with a figure of Venus and Cupid, the other with a figure of Apollo and his hound, on triangular pedestals with winged putti on the angles centred by a cartouche with a Habsburg eagle, on a pierced foliate scrolling base centred by a bearded faun, with L-bracket, stamped '1871.26'

Lot Essay

These andirons are inspired by the celebrated model executed by Girolamo Campagna in the Archaeological museum, Venice, illustrated in L. Planschig, Venezianische Bildhauer Der Renaissance, Vienna, 1921, abb. 593.
