Lot Essay

With their laurel-festooned and hermed 'quiver-like' pilasters with Bacchic lion-heads capped by Veil-draped and palm-flowered sacred urn tablet, their branches festooned with laurel baguettes, these wall-lights reflect the influence of the architect and 'ornameniste' Jean-Charles Delafosse (1734-1791). Delafosse's Nouvelle Iconologie Historique, 1770, vol. I, fig 92, which was republished by J.F. Chervau Fils, widely disseminated his architectural ideas throughout Europe.
