GEORGE MALE George Charles Male was born in West Ham on 8th May 1910 and began his footballing career with West Ham Schools. He joined Arsenal as an amateur in November 1929 from Clapton and he turned professional in May 1930. Initially playing in the left-half position he was moved to right-back for season 1932-33. It was during this season that he became a first-team regular after two seasons in the Combination. His F.A. Cup debut was in the 1931-32 final when Arsenal were defeated by Newcastle United. In the years leading up to the outbreak of W.W.II he was more-or-less an ever-present in the great Gunners side formed by Herbert Chapman and subsequently George Allison, winning four Football League Division 1 Championship medals and a F.A.Cup example in 1936. After the war ended he played sporadically for Arsenal in season 1946-47 and 1947-48 before retiring in the close-season of 1948. His career with Arsenal continued firstly as coach and then chief scout and his proudest moment in this capacity was recommending Charlie George, the Arsenal 1971 F.A.Cup-winning scorer, to the club as a schoolboy.
