Regarded in his day as one of the most astute passer of a football, Henry Cockburn was born in Ashton-under-Lyne on 14 September 1923. He played with Gosling F.C. before signing amateur forms with Manchester United in 1943, turning professional in August 1944. During a near ten season career with Manchester United he won a F.A.Cup Winners medal in 1948 (see lot 113), and the Division 1 League Championship in 1952. He also gained International recognition, appearing on thirteen occasions for England. In 1954 he signed for Peterborough United and after several more moves he retired from playing in 1960.
