JACKIE MILBURN Jackie Milburn, or "Wor Jackie" as he was affectionately known, was born in the North East mining town of Ashington in 1924. He left school at the age of 14, and after being rejected by the Navy, he began working as an apprentice fitter at the local colliery. He joined Newcastle United in August 1943 playing initially as an inside-forward. However, in October 1947 he moved positions to centre-forward, wearing his now-famous No.9 shirt. To this day, "Wor Jackie" remains the Magpies' top goalscorer, having notched up 238 goals in 492 League and Cup appearances throughout the 1950s. Milburn won the F.A. Cup with Newcastle three times in six years and, in the third final in 1955, he scored one of the competition's fastest-ever goals, after 45 seconds. He also played 13 times for England and scored nine goals, including a hat-trick against Wales. Milburn left Newcastle United in 1957, and became player/manager of Linfield F.C.. At the Irish club he won League and Cup honours and was named Ulster Footballer of the Year in 1958 after netting 150 goals. At his Testimonial match in 1967, almost 46,000 attended St. James's Park.
