JAN SCHONK (1889-1976) Dutch artist and designer Jan Schonk achieved fame during his lifetime with his ceramics and graphic art. The following lot numbers all originate from the family of the artist. (Lots 30-47) During the years 1923-1924, Jan Schonk lived in Amsterdam and made regular visits to the city zoo Artis. There he made sketches and studies of animals for his woodcuts and lithograps. Also he started modelling animal figures in ceramics. During the years 1925-1930 Schonk designed ceramics for the Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland in Gouda. Besides tile-designs and sculptures he also designed boxes with figural covers. Schonk cooperated with Jo Bennis with whom he shard an office in the Gouda factory. Bennis was responsible for the colouring of the tiles that were produced only for a short period of time as they proved to be commercially unsuccessful. Schonk's ceramic sculptures were popular since the artist considered it his task to sell them for reasonable prices, below Dfl. 10,- (Euro 4,50). After artistic conflicts with director W.A. Hoyng, Jan Schonk left the company of Zuid-Holland in 1930. The Gouda factory of Ivora produced some 14 sculptures by his hand later that year. Especially the boxes and covers that were produced at the Zuid-Holland factory can be considered as strong sculptural products, most probably inspired by boxes and covers designed by Hildo Krop at ESKAF. Schonk on his turn inspired Leen Muller, one of the Zuid-Holland designers.
