Lot Essay

Francis Darton & Co. started in business in 1834 and are recorded at a number of premises in St John Street, London, until 1900 and later. The company continues to this day as part of Russell Scientific Instruments Ltd. (see www.russell-scientific.co.uk). The 'Gold' slide was invented in 1914 by E. Gold of the Metereological Office and is a thermometer built into a type of slide rule. It provides easy adjustment for latitude, height of cistern above mean sea level and mean index error.
