Comprising a coffee pot, teapot and covered sugar bowl, each rectangular with stepped square covers, angular spouts, the black patinated handle resembling a smokestack, the sides of each with triangular patination, each marked on reverse, SKYSCRAPER DES. PAT. PENDING APOLLO E.P.N.S. 5259

Lot Essay

The Apollo "skyscraper" design was introduced circa 1928, and a tea and coffee service is illustrated in The Jewellers' Circular, May 31, 1928, p. 14 and Vogue, June 1, 1928, p. 116. Another service sold from The Maurice and Margo Cohen Collection, Christie's, New York, 11 June 1999, lot 418.
The matching cocktail pitcher is illustrated in Charles L. Venable, Silver in America 1840-1940, 1994, p. 288, fig. 9.33, and sold at Christie's, New York, Jan 15, 2004 - Jan 16, 2004, lot 82.
This tea and coffee service and the cocktail beakers retain their original black smoke-stack handles and triangular patination evoking the cityscape of the modern metropolis.
