A DIAMOND AND TOURMALINE WRISTWATCH, BY CARTIER

A Highly Important Collection of Jewellery Lots 162 to 248 form an impressive personal collection of jewels and watches purchased during the 1980s and 1990s by a European collector. The glamorous and colourful pieces combine with the elegance and quality of jewels from some of the finest jewellery houses, in particular Bulgari and Cartier, and some significant gems such as the 25.08 carat pear-shaped diamond. More than thirty ladies and gentlemens gold and gem-set watches are included in the collection from makers such as Bulgari, Cartier, Rolex and Patek Philippe to name but a few. Some of the highlights include five cabochon sapphire and diamond jewels from the Cartier 'Panther' collection (lots 243 to 247). The panther decorative motif was first introduced by Cartier on a wristwatch in 1914, following the fashions of interior design and the use of exotic animal skins. The first representation of the entire animal was circa 1917 on an onyx panther vanity case owned by Jeanne Toussaint, who was later to become director for Cartier 'Haute Joaillerie'. In 1949, the Duchess of Windsor took possession of her second panther jewel, a crouching panther sitting on a cabochon sapphire of 152.35 carats. Throughout the 20th century, Cartier developed their menagerie of jewels from tigers to lovebirds, but it is the panther motif which still symbolises the firm's enduring creativity. Forming a significant part of the collection are several important necklaces. These include the heart-shaped yellow diamond riviere (lot 227) with over 80 carats of well matched yellow diamonds, the ruby and diamond fringe necklace (lot 200), the sapphire, ruby and cultured pearl necklace by Bulgari (lot 240), and the impressive heart-shaped emerald suite (lot 228). Furthermore, rings, earrings, bracelets and bangles of sapphires, rubies, cultured pearls, topaz, tourmaline and diamonds add to the colourful array. For watch collectors, the choice is also plentiful. A diamond 'Panther' wristwatch by Cartier (lot 230), a 'Happy Sport' wristwatch by Chopard (lot 167) and a diamond 'Trika' wristwatch by Bulgari (lot 212) form part of the selection for ladies of style. For gentlemen, the range includes a 'Submariner' wristwatch by Rolex (lot 231), a 'Pasha' wristwatch by Cartier (lot 208) and a yellow gold 'Ellypse' wristwatch by Patek Philippe (lot 210). Das Panther-Motiv, in Anlehnung an die damaligen Interieurs mit Dekorationen exotischer Tiere, ist erstmals 1914 auf einer Armbanduhr dargestellt worden. Das ganze Tier wurde erstmals um ca. 1917 auf einer Onyx Panther Kosmetikdose, im Besitz von Jeanne Toussaint, später Direktor der Cartier '‚Haute Joaillerie', dargestellt. 1949 kam die Duchess of Windsor in Besitz Ihres zweiten Panther Schmuckstücks, einem auf einem 152.35 karätigen Saphir Cabochon kauernden Panther. Während des 20. Jahrhunderts entwickelte Cartier eine ganze '‚Menageiei', ,von Tiernr zu Vøogeln, aber es ist und bleibt das Panther-Motiv, welches die fortdauernde und beliebte Kreativität dieser Firma symbolisiert. Ein weiterer eindrücklicher Part dieser Sammlung beinhaltet diverse Halsketten: unter anderem steht ein Rivière Collier aus insgesamt über 80 Karat gelben herzförmigen Diamanten (lot 227), eine Rubin- und Diamantkette (lot200), das mit Saphiren, Rubinen und Kulturperlen besetzte Bulgari Collier (lot 240), und die eindrückliche Suite aus herzförmigen kolumbianischen Smaragden (lot 228), zum Verkauf. Schlussendlich vollenden diverse Ringe, Ohrringe, Armbänder und Armspangen aus Saphiren, Rubinen, Kulturperlen, Topazen, Tourmalinen und Diamanten diese farbenfrohe Reihe. Auch für Uhrensammler ist die Auswahl vielfältig.
