Christie's New York, The Magnificent Jewels of Florence J. Gould, 11 April 1984, lot 468, sold for US$495,000
Florence Gould, the daughter of Frenchman Maximilien Lacaze, married Frank J. Gould, the son of the famous railroad magnate Jay Gould, in 1923. Settling in Juan-les-Pins in the South of France, the couple continued the family tradition as great philanthropists patronising French literary figures, funding literary prizes and supporting various charities. Mrs Gould's magnificent jewels which were sold by Christie's New York in 1984, including the fluted emerald beads now offered here, stand out as one of the truly great collections of the 20th century.
