Lot Essay

Talmage lived most of his life in Cornwall, apart from a spell in France as an Official War Artist for Canada, and a few years in London. Elected as a Royal Academician in 1929, he painted a variety of subjects including horse portraits and hunting scenes. The present work with its fluid handling and characteristically free use of paint, captures the sunlight in this open, informal composition.
