Lot Essay

The present watercolour is one of the original drawings commissioned by Harry Forbes Witherby for The Handbook of British Birds, published 1940 in 5 volumes and reprinted six times over the next twelve years. Lodge produced 64 coloured and two black and white plates in total. Plates were also commissioned from Roland Green, Henrik Grönvold, Philip Rickman, John Cyril Harrison and Sir Peter Scott.
