AN UNMOUNTED CUSHION-SHAPED DIAMOND
THE ESTATE OF CAROLYN OEI Carolyn Oei was born in 1916, the eldest daughter of Laura Ping-Nio, the founder of Nonya Meneer, Indonesia's most well known maker of herbal medicines and cures. From the age of 16, she worked in her mother's factory and together, they expanded their business throughout Indonesia, offering a range of more than 120 herbal products, efficacious for both curing and prevention of diseases. She married into the well-known Oei Tiong Ham family, but continued to run her business with the help of her brothers and sisters. Carolyn and her mother shared a deep passion for art, antiques and gemstones. In particular, she loved diamonds, both white and fancy coloured, which she would wear liberally on special occasions. Many of these diamonds were locally mined in Kalimantan on the Island of Borneo, whose mines are famous for producing fancy coloured diamonds. The 33.35 carat diamond from Mrs. Oei's estate is a splendid reminder of the magnificence of her jewellery collection.
