Lot Essay

A successful merchant and owner of East Indiamen ships, Abel Chapman was a Director of the London Assurance Corporation from 1795. The present portrait was originally commissioned for St. Thomas's Hospital, where Chapman was Treasurer for forty-three years.

Andrew Morton was a portrait painter whose style has often been likened to that to Sir Thomas Lawrence. He studied at the Royal Academy and exhibited there between 1821 and 1845.
