Lot Essay

Jacques d'Arthois was the leading landscape artist in Brussels in the second half of the 17th Century. A collaborator of David Teniers II, who painted the figures in at least three of his landscapes, his popularity with contemporary patrons is attested both by the substantial fortune he made from his art and from the eight engravings Wencelas Hollar after pictures by Arthois.
