Lot Essay
After a more than two-decade long engagement with the black Bindu as a single meditative form of concentrated energy, Raza first conceived of the white Bindu in a work entitled, Param Bindu, painted in 1989. For Raza, this was a gradual movement towards the purity of form emanating from a more austere palette. Of this search, Raza states, "Now I am conceiving the Bindu in white, as I had seen it recently inscribed on the forehead of a woman in India. Distilled in clarity, pure and luminous, this will be Shanti Bindu." (G. Sen, Bindu: Space and Time in Raza's Vision, New Delhi, 1997, p.129.)
