Lot Essay

This placid scene seems to be a painterly version of a photograph as a memento of a place and moment during the artist's journey in Pakistan. With the architectural backdrop, it bears a humourous similarity to tourist photographs in front of the Taj Mahal for example, as Souza and his friend strike a pose. However, the building behind is not as distinct. It could be a composite of the Merry Weather Tower in Karachi along with the numerous colonial or Mughal era vestiges near the museum and university of Lahore.
