The present watercolour is dateable to 1788 as another view of Chepstow Castle clearly signed and dated was included in the exhibition Captain Cook's Painter: John Webber, Kunstmuseum Bern and Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, 27 March- 15 September 1996, no. 36.
