Lot Essay

"Of the many narratives that can be threaded through Noel McKenna's recent paintings, his visit to the New Zealand Maori paa (village) of Parihaka, Taranaki, in November 1998 is a surprising but nonetheless illuminating one.

Parihaka was an important site of the Maori passive resistance against the encroachments of the colonial forces from the 1870's onwards...

McKenna's Fringe Dwellers brings to mind the Parihaka settlement itself - an isolated conglomeration of small houses located at the base of two peaks, Pouakai and Mount Taranaki (Egmount). (G O'Brien, op.cit.)
