Lot Essay

In 1949 Mary Fedden moved to Durham Wharf in Hammersmith to live with Julian Trevelyan, whom she later married. It was around this time that she started to explore her wider surroundings, rather than focussing, as she had previously, on domestic objects. This shift may have been influenced by Trevelyan, who was primarily a landscape painter.

The present picture was painted in 'Chiswick Park', nearby the studio at Durham Wharf. Fedden painted there more than once, another example being The Birds in Chiswick Park, 1955 (see M. Gooding, Mary Fedden, Aldershot, 1995, p. 20).
