Lot Essay

This strongly worked drawing has an element of the surreal; the chapel in the centre of the composition appears to be completely unconnected with the surrounding industrial landscape, a characterstic often seen in Lowry's treatment of churches. Another frequently used device is the fence which divides the foreground from the main picture, highlighting the artist's detachment from the subject.

Reginald Brill (1902-1974) was an artist in both oils and watercolours of landscapes, figure studies and portraits. He was principal of Kingston School of Art and wrote Modern Painting and Art as a Career.
