Lot Essay

Lowry frequently included children in his paintings and in the present work depicts a game of rounders against an industrial landscape in the distance. The spectators, participants and passers-by merge together, the games field simply created in a space between the buildings, a winding path and the empty carts tipped up in the backdrop. The same landscape with the carts can be seen in Carts on Wasteland, lot 89 in this sale.

A pencil study of the same title, in the collection of Professor Carel Weight, dated 1925, was based on a scene at the Girl Guides' Camp at Gee Cross, near Hyde in Cheshire.
