Lavery was always interested in the topography of the coastline, finding inspiration in the juxtaposition of the natural formations and man-made structures. The present work, with the white painted railings, creates an intriguing pattern, dividing the foreground with the esplanade from the sea. A small jetty projects into the sea to the extreme left of the picture which in turn guides the eye out to the tiny white sailboat which is nearly out of sight on the horizon line. Lavery painted similar coastline views around the British Isles, using a similar composition device in From the Royal Albion, Brighton, 1936, the series of paintings of the North Berwick links golf course, and his many views of the coast in Tangiers and Tunis.
