Lot Essay

Paul Fischer's fascination with the real lives of those around him partly explains his popularlity. His paintings provide quiet windows on the everyday. Fischer's interest in photography explains his often sophisticated compositions; he delights the viewer with many areas of interest and encourages the eye to move continually across the canvas.
The fast changing world of the late 19th and early 20th century provided Fischer with endless subjects, in this instance motor cars, trams and other vechicles. Fischer's skills of composition are best seen in his great street scenes such as The fire engine, where the complex and intricate machine is presented as a celebration of industrial development. We become part of the crowd drawn into the drama of the event.
