BLAEU, Willem (1571-1638) and Jan BLAEU (1596-1673). Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, sive Atlas Novus. Amsterdam: Johannes Blaeu, 1645-50-48.
4 volumes, 2° (510 x 320mm). Latin text. 4 hand-coloured engraved titles, heightened in gold, half-title, numerous illustrations and diagrams hand-coloured, 330 double-page engraved maps, all coloured in a contemporary hand. (Inkstain to foredge of vol. 1 just reaching into margin of a few leaves, a very few old marginal repairs, occasional light soiling and dampstain.) Contemporary Dutch vellum gilt, edges gilt (vols. 1, 2 and 4 rebacked with the original spines laid down, some staining and soiling, ties renewed, endpapers of vol. 1 renewed, vol.3 joints starting with small loss, rear free endpaper torn with loss, and lacking ties). Provenance: small drawing in an early hand (volume 1 in margin of D1).
A FINE COPY OF THE RARE 4 VOLUME THEATRUM, This copy purchased around 1650, just before its enlargement to a 5 volume set (with the addition of the maps of Scotland). This copy collates according to Koeman (2000) 2.202. Van der Krogt remarks on a copy of a 4 volume Blaeu in Koblenz with volume 1, both parts dated 1650, the present copy having volume 1, part 2 dated 1650 (p. 121). It would appear that this set was purchased from Blaeu in 1650 with the latest available volumes.
The set comprises:
Volume I: Part i (1645) -- World and northern Europe: 24 maps; Germany: 60 maps. Part ii (1650) -- Netherlands: 36 maps. Koeman 2: 202.1HM.
Volume II: Part i (1650) -- France: 48 maps. Part ii (1650) -- Spain: 13 maps; Asia: 11 maps; Africa: 5 maps; America: 15 maps. Koeman 2:202.2M.
