Lot Essay

The sitter, née Mary Horneck (1754-1840), married General Francis Gwyn, equerry to King George III. Mrs Gwyn was Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Charlotte, and became known as the 'Jessamy Bride' after verses were written about her by the novelist Oliver Goldsmith (1730-1774), with whom her family was acquainted.
