Lot Essay

The present picture is based on Canaletto's view of the same subject, of 1752-1753, in the Northumberland Collection. There are several versions of the scene, some having been attributed to Samuel Scott or his studio (for discussion see W.G. Constable, Canaletto, 1989, Oxford, II under no.419).
