Lot Essay

William Blake Richmond travelled in Italy between 1866 and 1869 where he was introduced by Frederic Leighton to the Italian landscape painter Giovanni Costa. In turn, Richmond formed part of a group of artists known as the 'Etruscans' after Costa's birthplace, Trastevere, in ancient Etruria. Influenced by Costa, they painted vibranty landscapes such as the present work.
