CHATEAU PETRUS
The label simply says PÉTRUS, those that have made the pilgrimage to Pomerol will know, that there is no Château, just a plain two story building more akin to a farmhouse, a reminder of the humble beginnings for both Pétrus and Pomerol.
It was Madame Loubat who in the 1920s began acquiring parcels of land in Pomerol and it was the Pétrus property that in the 1940s and 1950s became her focus. The story of trying to make a great wine is nothing new, but trying and succeeding to produce a wine equal to its First Growth friends in the Médoc in the 1940s in Pomerol, was. That same drive for quality and recognition is still there today and is the reason it remains at the top of its game. The current regime, under the guidance of the Moueix family, took control in 1961 and have continued, or even increased the hard work and effort pioneered by Madame Loubat.
The attention to detail in both the vineyard and the winery and the almost obsessive nature of the whole operation give good reason for such outstanding quality. Stories such as gathering the entire 1982 crop in only 10 hours are not only true, they are the sort of thing that is a regular occurrence at Pétrus.
I think that most would agree that the site is unique, with very little gravel, almost all pure clay, on a small rising in the center of the Pomerol vineyards, it is perhaps this that gives it an edge. One thing is for sure, no else comes close with the Merlot grape.
What ever the reasons, there can be no disputing that few wines can compete with Pétrus for pure and sublime enjoyment, or should that be indulgence.
