A pardon for Mary Jenkins, transported for life in 1837, described as a 'House servant' of Shoreditch [London], thirty years old and of swarthy complexion.
Franklin, discoverer of the north-west passage, was governor of Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) from 1837-1843, and did much to humanise the treatment of convicts transported there.
