LAFAYETTE, Marie-Joseph, Marquis de (1757-1834). Autograph letter signed to Monsieur [Nicolas-Jean Baptiste] Tripier, La Grange, 27 May 1817, ½ page, 4to, integral address leaf, docketed by the recipient, traces of seal (seal tear repaired, traces of tape and mounting on address leaf)
Advising his correspondent (presumably a lawyer) that he will visit his son in Paris during July, wishing that 'notre affaire Suffren' could be finished by then, and referring to related matters.
Lafayette's surviving letters include several of this period addressed to Tripier and referring to the Marquis de Suffren de Saint Tropez (L. Gottschalk, P.S. Pestieau and L.J. Pike. Lafayette. Guide to Letters, Documents and Manuscripts in the United States, Cornell, 1975). After the accession of Louis XVIII and his failure to be elected in Paris, Lafayette spent much of his time on his country estate, practising scientific farming while maintaining a large correspondence, partly with his friends in America. He was elected deputy for the department of Sarthe in 1818.
