At Balaclava, Florence Nightingale writes 'upon a matter which is of some importance to our Hospital', describing the 'diligence, sobriety, trust-worthiness & cleverness' of her Orderly, Samuel Vickery, a Private in the Coldstream Guards who, having been 'frostbitten soon after Inkerman', has recovered sufficiently to render himself indispensable to her hospital at Scutari; and asking that in the even of the regiment being ordered home, a means might be found of allowing Vickery to remain 'till he can go home with the last of the Sick from Scutari'. The undated letter asks the recipient to send a carriage to carry some parcels; 'And if you come in it then I shall have the pleasure of seeing you'. (2)
