ARIOSTO, Ludovico (1474-1533). Orlando Furioso. Birmingham: J. Baskerville for P. and G. Molini, 1773. 4 volumes, 8° (237 x 147mm), subscribers list bound in vol. IV, engraved portrait frontispiece of the author by Fiquet after Eisen, 46 engraved plates by Bartolozzi, de Longeuil, de Ghendt and others after Cipriani, Moreau le Jeune, Eisen, Cochin, Monnet and Griuze. (Occasional browning, light dampstaining or spotting.) Contemporary tree calf sides, speckled calf flat spine gilt with red, citron, and black labels, marbled edges (slightly rubbed, a little wear at corners). Provenance: Lady Jonet (signature on title-pages) -- WRJC bookplate with crane crest; Carl-Bertel Nathhorst .
An elegant set issued from the Baskerville press. In the preface to the work, the publisher, Pietro Molini, boasts the virtues of this revised edition of Ariosto's poem 'on the ground of the correctness of its text, the diligence of his printer (the 'notissimo Giovanni Baskerville'), and the collaboration of the most celebrated artists of London and Paris' (Ray). Amongst the artists, the most notable were Gian Battista Cipriani (1727-1785) from London - author of 14 plates engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi (1727-1815) with stipple technique - and Jean-Michel Moreau (1741-1815), the most celebrated Parisian illustrator of the time.
