Grange Hermitage--Vintage 1968
South Australia. Penfolds
Lots 731 and 732 bin-soiled and slightly damaged labels. Recorked at the Penfold's Wine Clinic in 1994 and 1996 respectively. Lot 731 level base of neck. Lot 732 level into neck. Lot 733 one label bin-soiled and one good. Lot 734 bin-soiled labels. Lot 735 labels bin-soiled and damaged. Lots 733 to 735 levels top-shoulder
Max Schubert considered the 1968 a "lesser Grange. Some experts believe that the oak character dominates the fruit in the wine, which nevertheless won a trophy, 6 golds and 5 other medals between 1968 and 1973
Tasting note: brick red. Fading wine with leathery, sous bois aromas. The palate is beginning to dry out with leathery, gamey, fruit flavours, fine tannins but acid coming to the fore. A.C.
